Self Directed Study Spotlight Lakyn Leupold My name is Lakyn Leupold and I am a senior at HHS. I am doing career research as my SDS. I plan on going into the field of atmospheric science. I am currently researching the major at KU and what classes I will need to take. I plan to explore the career opportunities this major offers. This research is very helpful because there are no jobs around here similar to the career I want. It is helping me feel more confident in my major choice and more prepared for college!

Hiawatha High School Work Based Learning Spotlight Athalia Hoschouer, Hiawatha Elementary School My SDS at the elementary school with Ms. Ashley Olson will help me after high school because I plan to become a kindergarten teacher. This gives me more experience with children while still in school and helps me see what it’ll be like if I choose to pursue this career field. It’ll help make my choices clearer because I won’t be going into the work force not knowing beforehand if it is really what I want to do with my life. So far, I am enjoying it and am looking forward to graduation and becoming an early childhood educator.

Hiawatha High School Work Based Learning Spotlight Grady Bacon, Carls Body Shop Going to the body shop has taught me and will continue to teach me many life lessons that I will be able to benefit from for the rest of my life. It has taught me communication skills over the phone and in person, whether this be talking to customers, other businesses getting/ordering parts or talking with insurance companies. I have been able to work on my people skills, answering phone calls to schedule estimates, answering questions about their vehicles and helping with estimates. I have learned how to look at vehicles and inspect damage, start estimates, and fill out data on the estimating software. Being mechanically inclined has helped me excel at the body shop, I have been able to remove broken mechanical parts/ body panels, make repairs if needed, and replace with new OEM parts. Gaining these skills will help me in the future by giving me the understanding on how vehicles are supposed to be repaired, how the insurance world works on vehicles, and how to look at a repaired vehicle to make sure it was done right.

Hiawatha High School Work Based Learning Spotlight Sydney Smith, Hiawatha Middle School In this picture, I am in Mrs. Williams fifth grade science classroom. I am helping them take their quiz over their recent scientist project. Each student researched a scientist, and now that they are done, they get to see each student’s research and answer a quiz off of it. One of my favorite parts of my TA is helping students one one one, and this picture illustrates that.

Hiawatha High School Work Based Learning Spotlights My name is Graycen Ferris. This is a picture of me and one of the physical therapists I’ve been shadowing. Her name is Kelli and she is a newer PT to RehabVisions. Today we were actually watching Adam who is another PT dry needle someone. Dry needling is almost like acupuncture in a way and it involves very tiny needles that help relieve tension and pressure in a certain area. It was very interesting to see and it’s a somewhat newer rehab practice, having only been around for about 15 years at this point. I absolutely love getting to go shadow at a physical therapy clinic. Everytime I go, it makes me even more certain that pursuing a career in physical therapy is for me. I learn so much and everyday involves something new!

Hiawatha High School Work Based Learning Spotlight Clara Lindstrom, Dr. Jordan Haedt DDS For my SDS, I go to Dr. Jordan Haedt’s dental office every other day. This is easily my favorite class just because I love being there so much. It has helped me become so confident in my career choice. Before starting my SDS, I was undecided, but I know for sure now that I want to work in the dental field. Dr. Jordan has helped me figure out what classes I should prepare myself for in college and what to expect as a dentist. I am so glad I have been given this opportunity.

As you may know, there was some excitement at the middle school this evening. An HVAC motor blower caught fire during the brown out. Emergency personnel responded and the situation has been resolved. We will be having school tomorrow.
