Work Based Learning Spotlight: Connor Kettler
Hi my name is Connor Kettler. My SDS is inside the High School with AD and Vice Principal. I mainly shadow the AD side of the job since that falls under my major and possibly what I would like to do. My supervisor for this is Mr. Kettler who holds both these positions. I picked this place because it was simple to go to and because I am able to understand and learn more from settings that I am more comfortable in and are familiar with.

Mark your calendars Hiawatha High School’s presentation of Game of Tiaras!

Plot:
When the aging king of a Magical Kingdom (England) decides to split his empire between his three daughters, Cinderella, Belle, and the Snow Queen-who-in-no-way-resembles-a-copyrighted-character, terrible tragedy ensues. Terrible, hilarious tragedy. Combining the gut-wrenching plot twists of the popular television series and the soul-numbing despair of Shakespearean tragedy, this adaptation of King Lear will leave you dying with laughter as the body count mounts. When you play the Game of Tiaras, you win or you die.

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Olivia Hawks, Hiawatha Middle School
My Teaching Internship is at the middle school for Mrs. Coverts art class. I go there to see what types of art she teaches, what style of art that she shows the kids, (it has been watercolor as she loves how much it can be layered and etc.) She makes sure she never gets bored teaching the same things to the kids. She also put in a lot of time for the kids. I think she has given me a good outlook on how art teachers and middle school teachers work best.
Mrs. Covert is nice and has been very open, she has given me many opportunities to grow, and teach me. It's a lot of work and hands on. I chose this internship as I felt like it would be a simple and easy way to start my outlook for art teaching. It's close to the high school, I can walk over, this middle school is the place I have spent four years of my life in. It's amazing to see the next group of freshmen come in and see what they plan to do for their next years. I feel like this place is a great middle ground of their work ethic and art ethic. It shows that kids want to grow and learn but it also shows that kids do struggle, it's where they learn to grow and flourish in this world. I'm proud to be able to help them form into the person they want to be.

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Dana Howard, Hiawatha Elementary School
My name is Dana Howard and for my Teaching Internship, I am interning with Mr. May, the vocal teacher, at the Middle School. This is my second year with Mr. May. On Mondays I’m with his fifth grade class and part of his sixth grade class. I chose this internship because my future career is to be a music teacher. With this internship I hope to find the age group that I would like to work with as well as some teaching techniques that I would like to implement in my classroom.
In the picture above, I am explaining the assignment given to the students. They weren’t doing the normal routine because Mr. May was sick that day. It gave me a chance to use some of the techniques I observed as well as learn more about the students. The assignment was to find five songs that reminded them of important parts of the year and to explain why. I learned that not a lot of them truly listen to music, more of them just have it as a background sound. Others have a niche playlist and others a wide variety of tastes. I also got to learn how they connect music to their world. But trying to help them with this assignment, it only strengthens my desire to become a music teacher, so I can keep having those types of moments with the students.

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Paul Mueller, BBCC
Hello, I am Paul Mueller. This semester I am job shadowing with Joel Bacon and his company BBCC. I go to BBCC storage to observe and learn how to do electrical wiring for Joel in this building. I enjoy going here because Joel always has something for me to do and it is always a great learning experience. I picked this job shadow because I'm going to be an electrician when I get out of school. I got to vo tech as well which I have included some of my work from vo tech as well in this WBL experience. Although it's not work done with Joel it's still things I'm learning that will help me become an electrician. Joel supervises me when I'm at the building. He helps guide me through whatever I struggle with electrical wise. I think doing WBL with Joel is the right fit for me as he does construction and is always needing electricians so it's nice to be able to learn from him and possibly work with him in construction when I'm done with schooling.

First graders are learning about symbols and traditions of the United States. Mrs. Bannister and third grader Mila Bechtold shared their experiences from when they visited the Liberty Bell in person. Ask your first grader if the bell still rings today!
