Note from Nurse Heather: It's the time of year when we are seeing more conjunctivitis (pink eye) and strep throat in the Elementary School. Both of these are very contagious and can be spread very easily. There are different types of conjunctivitis, but the 3 we see the most are allergic, viral, and bacterial. Symptoms of conjunctivitis are redness in the eyes, itching, watering, irritation, yellow/green discharge, or crusting of the eyelids or eyelashes. Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are very contagious so if you notice your student displaying any of the above symptoms, please make an appointment with their physician to be checked. If they are prescribed antibiotics, they will need to be home for 24 hours on antibiotics before they can return to school. Strep throat is caused by a bacteria and symptoms can include fever, pain when swallowing, redness in the back of the throat/tonsils, white patches or streaks of pus on the tonsils, and swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck. If your student is complaining of the symptoms, please make an appointment with their physician to have their throat swabbed. If diagnosed with strep throat, they will more than likely be prescribed an antibiotic and will need to remain off school for at least 12-24 hours after starting the antibiotic. Please make an appointment for your student to be checked with your physician if you notice any of the above symptoms of conjunctivitis or strep throat. If you have any questions about the above, please contact me at 785-742-7181.

The Kindergarten Classes enjoyed a morning at Noble Park. We were joined by the senior members of the baseball and softball teams. The students enjoyed watching the older kids play wiffle ball, played their own games of wiffle ball against each other, had snacks and finished with stations of hitting, throwing, and base running. Thank you to the High School kids, HBSC for allowing us to tour your facility and use it for our fun morning! In the words of one of the K students “this is the best day of my life!” #HESRedHawks
