1st graders went on an Earth Day Field trip to Reserve, Ks. It was put on by the Sac & Fox Tribe. We had a great time learning about water pollution, the 3 R's, the water cycle, making seed balls, how to clean up an oil spill, & we even took home our very own trees! #HESRedHawks

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Kacer Knudson For my health care work experience, I am shadowing Kindra Howard, an SLP in our school district. My WBL is never in one set place; we occasionally travel to Maple Heights and the Hiawatha Elementary School, but we’re primarily at the Hiawatha Middle School. With that being said, I am allowed to observe people of all ages, from young children to adults as well as the elderly. In the picture, Kindra and I are at the middle school. Here, we are looking at a worksheet dealing with the initial "r" sounds in sentences. There are a variety of similar activities that both children and adults can perform. I've been lucky enough to observe Kindra go through a lot of these lessons, and they are interesting to watch! After high school, I am considering majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders, with the eventual goal of becoming a Speech-Language Pathologist. Kindra has given me more confidence in this decision by breaking down the job as a whole and allowing me to visualize the various duties she performs. This WBL has been truly fantastic, and it has given me a lot of insight into a potential career. Kindra is an incredible mentor who is very diligent, patient, and kind. I am looking forward to the rest of this semester!

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Grace Morey For my Healthcare Work Experience, I go to Amberwell Hiawatha to shadow Kristin Rosenberger and Kathy Kopf in the ultrasound department during my third hour period every other day. During this time, I am able to observe various sonograms that they perform. I’m limited to pictures I can take while observing in order to follow HIPAA regulations, so in this picture, I’m standing next to the ultrasound machine right before a pregnancy exam. Occasionally, I also shadow the obstetrics department when there are no scheduled ultrasounds, so I have had the opportunity to follow labor and delivery nurses, as well. It’s been very insightful learning about each of these departments, however, I plan to go into the diagnostic medical imaging field, which includes radiology and ultrasound. Every time I observe an ultrasound, Kristin and Kathy always make sure to explain in full detail what we’re looking at and the reason for the sonogram. I truly enjoy absorbing the knowledge that they have to share. This opportunity will greatly prepare me for a career in ultrasound by understanding what the day-to-day life consists of in this career. This experience has solidified my interest in becoming an ultrasound technician.

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Camden Thonen For my healthcare work experience, I follow both Jodi Twombly PA and Mark Sudbeck PT at Amberwell Hiawatha. I chose to follow both of these individuals so that I may get a varying perspective on healthcare work, in order to decide what best fit me. This program at our school has allowed me to narrow down my future career goals, and I have had the opportunity to learn a lot from the two medical professionals that I follow. Those experiences, and the knowledge that has come with said experiences has helped me decide to follow the physical therapy path in my post-secondary education.

Eli Hoschouer placed 6th in Humorous Solo Acting (HSA) qualifying him for State Festival. Levi Fleagle placed 6th in Prose qualifying him for State Festival. Olivia Hawks placed 5th in Serious Solo Acting qualifying her for State Festival. Once again well done to the entire team who shared their talent today! Work Based Learning Spotlight: Shelby Shughart I have done a lot of observing at the clinic by shadowing patient care techs in my healthcare work experience. Patient care techs take your vitals and ask you all the questions before your primary care doctor comes in. Some things that I have done were watching procedures, learning how to use strep, flu, and COVID-19 test machines, and I also have taken vitals. In this picture, I am with a vitals machine and holding a blood pressure cuff. I chose to shadow here because it is something I am interested in doing in my future. I am very thankful to have had this experience and to learn new things.
