Workbased Learning Spotlight: Shelby Shughart, Teaching Internship at Hiawatha Elementary School. I shadow Mrs. Robyn in the ECSE (preschool) classroom and I also shadow Mrs. Bannister in the first grade classroom. While shadowing both of these teachers I have been given the opportunity to learn what different elementary grade levels are like. I have done things like help the preschool students learn their numbers and count. I also help them learn letters and colors. In first grade I am there during Reading WIN time, and I get to help students read and become fluent at learning words and non sense words. I chose to intern at the elementary school because I enjoy helping kids and I am planning to go to college for elementary education. I have been very grateful for this opportunity to learn and experience new things!

For the last few weeks during Exploratories with Mrs. Diller, Miss Kelly and Mrs. Mathewson, the classes have been building structures that will hold a small pumpkin at least 2 inches off the ground. They were able to use a variety of supplies but had to come up with their own ideas for how to build it. We saw a lot of different styles of structures and many of their ideas worked!

First grade is continuing to learn about U.S. symbols and traditions. Mrs. Diller taught the entire first grade during our Social Studies time. She introduced the songs “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag” with some fun movements to each song. Thank you Mrs. Diller!

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Maddy Simmons, Amberwell Hiawatha
Throughout the first quarter, I did my Healthcare Work Experience at the Amberwell Primary Clinic. I have been thinking about pursuing nursing after high school for quite a few years. Shadowing Danielle Jagels has been a great experience. She has been a great mentor and I have learned a lot! I have got to listen in on many well child checks and med check appointments. I have really enjoyed getting to see patients from all ages. Overall, my experience at Amberwell has made me even more interested in becoming a Nurse Practitioner!
Work Based Learning Spotlight: Mariah Shafer, Amberwell Hiawatha
I shadow an RN in the labor and delivery department at Amberwell Hiawatha. I’m there everyday which gives me more of an opportunity to experience some amazing things. On days there aren’t patients in OB, I follow nurses in other departments of the hospital. Floating to different areas of nursing has made me more interested in nursing and all the amazing things nurses accomplish. Shadowing these nurses everyday has made me certain on my future decision to become a RN. I truly cannot wait to care for patients just as I see the nurses I follow do everyday!
