During the last two weeks, Spanish students learned about 'El Día de los Muertos', a Mexican tradition celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd. This pre-Hispanic Mexican tradition is intended to facilitate the return of departed souls to the Earth. During the past two weeks, students explored this tradition through various activities, including watching a documentary and the film 'Coco.', in Spanish language. They also participated in a skull-painting project and displayed their creations in the hallway. A total of 40 students painted skulls. Together with Mr. Leahy, the Art teacher, we selected the most colorful skull. The winner is Kylie Garcia, who created a vibrant orange and red skull. Congratulations to her!

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Maggie Pierce, Amberwell Hiawatha My name is Maggie Pierce, I am a Senior at Hiawatha High School. I chose to conduct my healthcare work experience at Amberwell Hiawatha. I shadow in the Emergency department. I am interested in learning more about the career of a Nurse Practitioner. I shadow either Cassie Vilander or Dustin Williams depending on the day. Having the opportunity to shadow at the hospital is great because I get to see first hand what a NP does in their daily tasks. It is really helping me to see if this is something I would want to pursue in the future. I have always been really interested in the medical field and I have really been enjoying getting to see what happens in the ER. By seeing what happens it is preparing me for after high school. I plan to major in Nursing in college. I am very grateful to be able to observe at Amberwell.

She was able to share information and photographs from when she visited Pennsylvania last summer. Work Based Learning Spotlight: Riley Gibbs, Amberwell Hiawatha My name is Riley Gibbs and I have been doing a healthcare work experience with Mark Sudbeck at Amberwell. I go to this every other day, attending the physical therapy department of the hospital to observe a variety of PT’s and PTA’s do physical therapy with their patients. This is a photo of me doing an exercise to work on improving balance to imitate things a patient might do. This work experience will help me gain experience in this field so that I can decide for sure that this is what I would like to major in for college, and do for a profession.

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Kacer Knudson, Amberwell Hiawatha My name is Kacer Knudson and this semester I am job shadowing at Amberwell Hiawatha’s Radiology Department. This year my schedule allowed for me to shadow for two class periods, so I get to spend most of my afternoons with the wonderful radiology team. During my visits I have gotten to observe many different machines that radiology technicians use on a daily basis. Some of these machines include an X-ray machine, an MRI machine, a DXA system, and many other fascinating machines. In fact, my friend Madison and I are standing by one of them in the picture shown. While the machines themselves are pretty cool, the technicians I follow are even cooler. All of them are very friendly and always kind enough to take a minute to explain what the machine is doing and what it’s taking a picture of. In all honesty, Radiology wasn’t something that particularly interested me from the get-go, but after spending some time within the Radiology Department it has definitely grown on me. When there’s occasional downtime the technicians informed me on where they went to school, the length of their schooling, classes they took, and other useful information to help me if this was a career I’d like to pursue. I know for certain that I’d like to do something on the health science pathway and being able to job shadow here has given me great insight in a career in Radiology. This SDS has been so amazing and I am looking forward to the rest of the semester!

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Elias Hoschouer, Amberwell Hiawatha This picture was taken before I watched a procedure at the hospital. I was able to put on scrubs and watch while in the operating room. Watching the procedure helps me by allowing me to see what it would be like in the future as a surgeon and the way things go In the operating room. This job shadow here at the hospital will help with my future in the medical field, giving me a good look into different areas that I might explore, and it will give me a better decision-making knowledge base on different areas that I may choose to explore.

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Madison Scott, Amberwell Hiawatha Radiology Department I am following the radiology department on my A days 3rd hour at Amberwell Hiawatha Hospital. I am following radiology because I am interested in that field of study after high school. I aspire to become a ultrasound technician. Although I am not shadowing ultrasound, I enjoy shadowing Radiology a lot! I get to see and learn many new things. This will help me after high school because it is what I plan to study in college. It will also get me ready for my future career in ultrasound.

Work-based Learning Spotlight: Lailah Tuttle, Teaching Internship, Hiawatha Middle School. This photo depicts me teaching the fifth grade band their newest assignment in their books. They were learning to play number 25 which is Lightly Row. We were focused on watching for and feeling the tempo in order to play in time. I had the percussionists trade off the playing responsibilities so that the students could feel the difference between the tempo when they’re following my conducting and listening to the percussionists and when they’re not. Mr. Estrada played the bass drum shortly after this picture to offer a rhythm underneath the rest of the band. After working with the whole band, I went through and allowed some of the students to play number 25 by themselves in order to earn their orange belt. The orange belt is the second level in the belt system that Mr. Estrada has designed. He has assigned each level a different color and Essential Elements song in a fashion that mimics karati levels. When a student is able to fully play a song, they get a ziptie in the color that represents that level, and they can put it on the handle of their case. This internship will help me after high school by providing me with some experience with working with and directing students in an ensemble. I am planning on going to K-State to earn a Masters of Business Administration with a Bachelor of Music Education/Performance. I also plan on getting a minor in theater. However, this internship can further prepare me for possible career opportunities in teaching music, more specifically band.
