Work Based Learning Spotlight: Annika Reschke, Hiawatha Family Dentistry My name is Annika Reschke, and I spend my health care work experience class at Hiawatha Family Dentistry. Every other day, I get to observe Dr. Willie Geisendorf, along with dental assistants Melissa Wegener and Lisa Burke and dental hygienists Katie Meng and Jessica Lednicky. I watch them fill cavities, pull teeth, fix teeth, and do routine check-ups. I am interested in pursuing a career as a dentist, so I wanted to explore dentistry firsthand. Seeing how a dental office is run, listening to Dr. Geisendorf and the office staff interact with patients, and watching them perform various procedures gives me a much better idea about and knowledge of what this career entails. We’ve also gotten to discuss the college coursework that comes with the dental program.

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Dana Howard, teaching intern @ Hiawatha Middle School In this photo, 6th grade vocal music students are playing a game I created. The game is called Mockingbird, it’s where I write or clap/stomp a rhythm and the students have to do it back. For the past week, I started incorporating rounds into the game with We Will Rock You by Queen. This helps them understand steady beats and learn how to separate themselves from everyone else, but also still be a part of the group. It also keeps them attentive to what’s next in the class and gathers focus for when Mr. May takes over again. This helps me better prepare myself for what children of their age group are like. They are all changing with multiple moods and willingness to learn. The more that I have thought about it, I realize that teaching might not be what I want exactly. From this experience though, I have learned that I do love teaching and incorporating music into everyday lives. I noticed that kids don’t want to participate in what Mr. May is doing, but when they get to play Mockingbird they enjoy. They listen when I correct their mistakes and how to do it properly. That is what makes me happy. Because of what I have learned and observed I am leaning more towards Music Therapy. That way I can teach music in many ways. I can teach how people can heal and let go and speak through sounds or words someone has thought of first. The first thing I was taught about music in elementary school from Mrs. Diller was that music was a language and I am reminded of that everyday. With what I am learning while interning with Mr. May and being in his and Mr. Estrada’s classes I am confident to say that teaching isn’t just a curriculum but communicating in different ways and teaching others how to do so.

8th Grade students in Mr. Hampl's American History & Government classes participated in a simulation activity called "The King's Taxes." It simulated the events leading to the American Revolution. Students were divided into roles such as King/Queen, Parliament, Tax Collectors, and Colonists. This activity inspired much passion and fierce debates. Apparently 8th graders have strong opinions about taxes & political rights! 🔴🔵 #HMSRedHawks #USD415 #RedHawkReady #Hiawathaks #HiawathaKansas #VisitHiawatha 🔴🔵

Miss Hollar’s 3rd grade class went to a “Haunted House” for math and got lots of tricks and treats! The students had a blast trying to guess what all of the tricks were! The had to solve a page of multiplication and division problems that were Halloween themed to draw if they got a trick or treat. They had to feel in the bag and think about what they thought it was and couldn’t share. Happy Halloween🎃 🔴🔵 #HESRedHawks #USD415 #RedHawkReady #Hiawathaks #HiawathaKansas #VisitHiawatha 🔴🔵

To further study the literary element of imagery, English III students created visual representations of lines from a colonial-period text. The only materials they could use were Play-Doh, toothpicks, and construction paper. Students then explained how the author’s use of imagery helped him get his point across to his audience.
